The story takes place in a small town in central Greece. The current mayor is a tyrant and a bully, but the people of Dylofo cannot envisage anyone else being mayor until the diminutive primary schoolteacher decides to confront the mayor on the issue of an ancient olive tree that the mayor plans to cut down to build a car park.
The story begins a few months before the municipal elections on the twenty-sixth of May, 2019. After considering several ways to prevent the mayor from cutting down the tree and taking his land, the cobbler concludes that the mayor must lose in the upcoming elections and proposes that the teacher stands for mayor.
The teacher is reluctant but accepts the challenge. After an incident at the teacher’s small school, in which the mayor’s granddaughter hits her head on a tree in the playground, the mayor endeavors to get the teacher disbarred from teaching.
What chance does the teacher have of winning the municipal elections? Will he be disbarred from teaching for life? Will the cobbler get his land back? This is a David and Goliath allegory.
The question is, will David or Goliath win?
